This bronze statuette was presented to Captain Roald Amundsen by the honorary presidents, council and members of La Société Normande de Géographie, in Rouen on 17 December 1912. It was made by Émile Louis Picault and called Ad Futurum, ‘The Future’.
The quote on the plaque that the winged muse holds is attributed to Victor Hugo: “Great men are humanity’s lighthouses”.
During his visit to Rouen in 1912, Amundsen gave a lecture to over 4,000 spectators in the city’s great hall.
