Vestibule
This space is accessed via the external door on the east side of the house, and was the main entrance for everyday use. Ugpi guards the door to the hall with his bow and arrow.
Ugpi was nicknamed “Uglen” (the “Owl”) by the crew of the Gjøa. He was a skilled hunter of about 30 years of age and did a lot of work for the expedition. Amundsen trusted him completely, describing him as having an honest and open expression. “There was something serious, almost dreamy about him,” he wrote. Ugpi was married to the much younger Kabloka, who captivated the crew with her “child-like innocent ways”.
