Herman Gade was Roald Amundsen’s best friend. They had contact most of their lives. Gade lived and worked in several places in America, both as mayor and consul in several cities, and as minister in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Gade was often visited by Roald Amundsen, who greatly appreciated his entire family. When Roald Amundsen went bankrupt, Herman Gade and Don Pedro Christophersen bought Amundsen’s properties in Svartskog, but still allowed Amundsen to live there.
After Amundsen disappeared in 1928, Gade gave Uranienborg to the Norwegian state and made sure that it became a museum. At the end of his life, Gade lived with his wife in the Château du Mesnil-Saint-Denis, outside Paris. He died in 1943.
