In summer 1927, Amundsen travelled on a lecture tour in Japan. In Tokyo a large welcome party greeted him. Later, he was invited to tea with the newly appointed Emperor Hirohito and his family. During his journey, Amundsen also spoke on Japanese radio. Amundsen was overwhelmed with gifts on this journey, including a three-hundred-year-old suit of armour, a sabre, and a great deal of porcelain, Japanese dolls and specially designed yukatas with patterns related to Amundsen’s life.
