Though Amundsen’s bookshelf mostly contains polar literature, there are exceptions. For example, a book written by Dr. Albert Søiland, who was an expert on cancer treatment in the 1920s. Amundsen was at his Los Angeles clinic in 1927 to have a tumour in his thigh attended to.

How sick Amundsen was and whether he healed completely are unknown.

On the book’s flyleaf is inscribed the greeting “To my distinguished friend and colleague Roald Amundsen, a slight tribute to his unparalleled human achievements. Sincerely, Albert Soiland, Los Angeles, Apr 27 1928”.
